Dutch flower fields

The inspiration behind Dutch Flowerfields by Wim van de Wege clearly lies in the iconic Dutch landscape of flower bulb fields, with their endless, meticulously arranged bands of color. These types of fields — especially known in regions like the Bollenstreek near Lisse or the Noordoostpolder — have for centuries been a symbol of Dutch culture and craftsmanship.

However, what sets Van de Wege apart is that he does not aim to simply depict a photographic or realistic image, but rather to capture the emotion and energy of the landscape. The vibrant colors, bold brushstrokes, and the rhythm of the horizontal bands suggest a deep admiration for the power of nature, the human ordering of it, and the ever-changing Dutch light — something that also inspired artists like Van Gogh and Mondrian.

Additionally, the painting exudes a certain abstraction; it is not just about recognizable flowers but also about the experience of space, color, and texture. You could say the work balances between Impressionism and Expressionism: on the one hand it captures the atmosphere of the moment, on the other hand it expresses the inner experience of the artist.
